Release Date: August 28, 2015
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is my favorite martial arts movie of all time. It’s brilliant storytelling, character driven plot, and mind-blowing fight choreography earned it 4 Oscars wins and another 6 nominations. Years ago, when I heard director Ang Lee wanted to make a prequel starring Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun-Fat I was ecstatic, but sadly, the project was shelved. Now, 14 years after the original production has begun for another film.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II: The Green Destiny began filming in May and will be seeing the return of Michelle Yeoh, but as for the rest of the cast, and even the director, they will not be returning. Instead, this film will be directed by Woo-Ping Yuen, who wowed audiences as an action director for Kill Bill Vol. 2, Kung Fu Hustle, and Drunken Master, which he also directed.
Donnie Yen (Ip man, Hero) will star along side Michelle Yeoh. He is considered to be one of China’s hottest martial arts stars so expect big things from him.
The plot for the first film was taken from the 4th book in Wang Du Lu’s Iron Crane series and the sequel will be based on the 5th book in the series; Iron Knight, Silver Vase, which involves a child of one of the heroes being switched at birth, and their quest to find their parent years later. Screenwriter John Fusco (Hidalgo, The Forbidden Kingdom)has been hired to write the script. Sadly, the books have not been translated to English yet, so those hoping to read the book before the movie comes out will have to brush up on their Chinese, though I did find a brief synopsis in English here.
Overall, I’m excited to see what the new faces will bring to the world of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but without the return of Ang Lee, one has to wonder if this will be nothing more than an over-the-top martial arts spectacle.
