Release Date: December 18, 2015
Alright, this is my first ever blog post, and since I am a Star Wars super-geek, I thought it only fitting to begin with Star Wars Episode VII. Now, there are a million rumors flying around out there, and sometimes it’s hard to tell what’s real and what’s not. So, let’s start with what we know for sure.
JJ Abrams is directing and co-writing Episode VII. Abrams has had recent success with his revamping of the Star Trek movie franchise but has been a life long Star Wars fan. He even put R2-D2 in each Trek movie.
Abrams is notorious for having his projects shadowed in secrecy, but for Star Wars, he seems to have embraced the fact that fans will stop at nothing to get a glimpse of what’s coming next, and he gave us teasers with these twitter posts:
We know filming began May 16, 2014 in Abu Dhabi, this strongly suggests we will once again be seeing Tatooine as a destination in our galaxy far, far away.
Abrams is co-writing the script with none other than Lawrence Kasdan who wrote the screenplay for both Episode V and VI. The story is said to take place 30 years after Return of the Jedi. This will account for the age of the actors from the original trilogy. Beyond that, rumors abound. One source says the story will focus on an outnumbered, tired, old Luke Skywalker. another source says the story will primarily be about Han Solo. Originally Disney stated that the story would revolve around a trio of young newcomers. So it’s anybody’s guess at this point.
Returning to the Star Wars universe are the original trilogy cast:
- Harrison Ford (Han Solo)
- Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia)
- Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker)
- Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca)
- Anthony Daniels (C-3PO)
- Kenny Baker (R2-D2)
The Millennium Falcon, everyone’s favorite starship is also back with a vengeance. According to ABCNews, one of the hydraulic doors fell on Harrisson Ford’s ankle during filming, causing him to be hospitalized.
Joining the Star Wars alums will be a number of new cast members, some of whom are very well known.
- Adam Driver (Inside Llewyn Davis, Lincoln)
- Oscar Isaac (Drive, Inside Llewyn Davis)
- John Boyega (Attack the Block, Imperial Dreams)
- Andy Serkis (LOTR, Planet of the Apes)
- Domhnall Gleeson (About Time)
- Max Von Sydow (Minority Report, The Exorcist)
- Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave)
- Daisy Ridley (Lifesaver)
- Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones)
So many things have been flying around the internet with regards to the filming of Star Wars, it’s hard to know for sure what’s real, what’s trying to throw us off the scent, and what’s a fan’s wishful thinking. Here are some of my favorites:
Lupita Nyong’o has been seen on set sporting yellow contacts, suggesting she will be one of the main villains of the film, I am very excited for this as I believe she would make a fantastic female villain, something Star Wars is lacking.
Simon Pegg has been spotted on location and some are saying he’ll have at least a cameo in the movie, but knowing that he and Abrams are friends, is it hard to fathom that he’s just visiting the set of the new Star Wars movie because his friend is directing?
Tom Cruise is also rumored to be up for a cameo and is reportedly in talks with Abrams to make this happen.
As I mentioned before, there are so many rumors, it’s best to just wait for your favorite trusted site (This one!) to sort out fact from fiction.
